URBIO BAUHAUS - New European Bauhaus for Increasing Urban Biodiversity

The URBIO BAUHAUS project addresses the urgent challenge of biodiversity loss in urban and peri-urban areas across Central Europe, driven by global warming and intensive urbanization. This loss not only threatens local ecosystems but also diminishes critical services like air purification, temperature regulation, and soil health, while contributing to the spread of heat islands and the degradation of infrastructure.

By embracing the core values of the New European Bauhaus — sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics — the project aims to halt and reverse biodiversity decline while enhancing the quality of urban life. Through innovative urban planning, policy transformation, and community engagement, URBIO BAUHAUS seeks to create greener, more resilient cities

Pilot Actions will be implemented Across Central Europe:

  • Kranj, Slovenia: Creation of biodiverse islands to conserve endangered plant and animal species.

  • Pula, Croatia: Implementation of urban micro-interventions to boost populations of three key biodiversity species.

  • Wrocław, Poland: Preservation of natural wildlife patterns to enhance biodiversity across urban areas.

  • Érd, Hungary: Development of biodiverse urban areas with specialised and edible plant species to promote ecological balance.

Project Details:

  • Duration: August 1, 2024 – January 31, 2027

  • Total Budget: EUR 2,039,600.00
